Quote Select car insurance guide
In this section we have provided a basic guide to the different types of car
insurance that are available in the UK. Note that this is only a rough guide and
that cover will differ from provider to provider. Be sure to refer to your policy
for details.
Basic types of UK car insurance
Third party - This is the lowest level of car insurance that is legally permitted
in the UK. Third party will basically protect you for liability to other drivers
should you be involved in an accident.
Third party, fire and theft - This type of insurance offers a slightly extended
version of the protection offered by third party insurance. In addition to liability
the insured vehicle will also be protected against damage that might occur in
incidents of fire, theft or attempted theft.
Comprehensive - This is the fullest type of car insurance that you can get
and is best described as an ‘all in’ type of policy. Every policy
will be different but comprehensive will usually protect you for accidental damage
to your own car, personal accident cover, loss or damage to personal possessions,
medical expenses, windscreen damage and more.
Additional extras
Breakdown recovery - For a small additional fee breakdown recovery will give
you assistance should you happen to break down whilst on the road. Towing, labour
and alternative transport are usually included in this type of insurance.
ULR - This stands for ‘uninsured loss recovery’ and will insure
you against legal fees that you might have to pay should you have the misfortune
to be involved in an accident with a vehicle that is uninsured.
